Maintaining the reliability of the electric grid is a constant challenge. Apart from aging and widely-distributed infrastructure and assets that require constant monitoring, natural and man-made events and accidents often conspire to thwart even the best laid plans. And when lengthy blackouts occur, lives, property and millions of dollars are placed at risk or lost. Wide area situational awareness (WASA) systems that are being implemented to avert such blackouts produce large volumes of real-time data that has to be correlated and interpreted in order for it to be useful. To do so, a new breed of software is required.

Situational Intelligence for the Grid

Space-Time Insight’s Grid Intelligence solution allows you to geospatially visualize the grid, analyze its behavior, understand and be prepared for threats to it, and take proactive action to avoid or mitigate crises and outage situations. The solution federates data from sensors, PMUs, and other high-volume real-time data sources, with environmental feeds (such as weather) and enterprise systems, into intuitive visual applications that operators and managers can use to make fast informed decisions. Instead of forcing operators to read through tables of data and try to interpret and manually correlate data from different sources, Grid Intelligence delivers at-a-glance assurance that the grid is functioning normally, and alerts, alarms and color-coded visuals when it is not.

What telemetry and communications equipment is not responding? Which part of the grid is at risk of failing? Which transmission line are being threatened by a storm or fire?	How many people and what property is at risk? Which assets have failed? Which assets are likely to fail next? What are the phase angle differences?	Which assets should be deactivated?
